This article examines devotional changes and continuities in the parishes of Teocaltiche, Jalostotitlán, and Lagos, located in the Altos de Jalisco region, between 1648 and 1800. Drawing on records from several episcopal visitations, it shows how a strong Marian devotional identity took root in this highland region beginning in the 17th century, particularly promoted by the confraternities associated with indigenous hospitals. These associations fostered Christian life and Marian devotion among the Indigenous population, with particular emphasis on the Immaculate Conception. During the 18th century, population growth and socioeconomic transformations favored the diversification of confraternities and cults in the region. Although the three parishes shared similar devotional practices, differences in their social and geographic contexts, as well as potential external influences, gave rise to distinct forms of local religiosity. The parish of Jalostotitlán remained predominantly Marian within the Indigenous sphere. Lagos, with greater social diversity, adopted “imported” devotions such as that of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Finally, the parish of Teocaltiche stood out for its openness to new devotions, such as those to Jesus of Nazareth and Saint Joseph.
